Negotiators from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States gathered in Abu Dhabi on Friday, aiming to end Russia's nearly four-year-long full-scale invasion. Zelenskyy, however, remains open to the idea of establishing a free trade zone under Ukraine's control in the east. He discussed this proposal with former U.S. President Donald Trump in Davos, Switzerland, and believes it could boost Ukraine's business prospects.
The talks on Friday were structured as a three-way dialogue, with the Ukrainian and Russian sides potentially meeting separately. Zelenskyy promised to brief European partners on the outcome. "Today's meeting will provide feedback to the Europeans," he said in a WhatsApp audio message.
The Kremlin kept details of the meeting to a minimum, referring to it as a "working group on security issues." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov revealed that the Russian delegation, led by Admiral Kostyukov, consisted of military officials. The talks, if necessary, could extend into Saturday.
Separately, Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev held discussions with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff on economic matters. This meeting took place just hours after Zelenskyy criticized European allies for their fragmented and slow response to the conflict, leaving Ukraine vulnerable to Putin's aggression.
Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov, who participated in Putin's meeting with Trump's envoys, emphasized that a long-term settlement cannot be achieved without resolving the territorial issue. Zelenskyy, after meeting with Trump in Davos, acknowledged that the future status of Russian-occupied land in eastern Ukraine remains unresolved, but peace proposals are "nearly ready."
Ushakov noted that Trump's envoys informed Putin about their discussions with Zelenskyy and Ukrainian and European officials. The Kremlin talks, described as "frank, constructive," and "fruitful," lasted nearly four hours.
Trump's Board of Peace, which Russia has been invited to join, was a key topic. Putin offered to contribute $1 billion from frozen Russian assets in the U.S. to help rebuild Gaza. When asked about this proposal, Trump expressed support, saying, "If he's using his money, that's great."
Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos was described as "productive and meaningful." Trump, upon returning to Washington, praised the meeting, noting that both Putin and Zelenskyy are willing to reach a deal and that concessions are being made to end the war.
The sticking point, according to Trump, is the issue of boundaries, which has been a persistent challenge in peace talks over the past year. Russia's larger army has captured approximately 20% of Ukraine since the start of hostilities in 2014, but these gains have come at a high cost for Moscow, with the Russian economy suffering the consequences of the war and international sanctions.
Ukraine, facing financial constraints and a shortage of troops, relies heavily on Western weaponry and support. Zelenskyy has criticized European allies for their slow and fragmented response, highlighting political disagreements within Europe over how to deal with Russia.
In his speech at the World Economic Forum, Zelenskyy urged Europe to become a global force, contrasting its response with Washington's bold actions in Venezuela and Iran. He likened the situation to the movie "Groundhog Day," where the same day is repeated endlessly. "A year has passed, and nothing has changed," he said, emphasizing the need for Europe to defend itself.
Zelenskyy chided Europe for its inaction on key decisions, inadequate defense spending, failure to stop Russia's "shadow fleet" of oil tankers breaking sanctions, and reluctance to use frozen European assets to finance Ukraine.
